How I got lilac hair.

Ok so the easiest way I can think of to set this out is to show you a picture of my hair and then write what the dye was I used to get to that point.  The overall length it took me to get to this colour was probably on average a month.  It could of been quicker, but I was trying to damage my hair as little as possible, so I did 1/2 dyes per week and then did hair treatments in between to keep my hair in good condition! If you have any questions about anything I've done or want any advice on trying to get this hair colour ( or any other ) then just leave a comment and I will reply back as quickly as I can! :) Hope this helps some people who were wondering!  (If anybody wants links to the products I used or sites/shop names you can buy them from or prices, then just leave a comment!)

I'm going to point out now, I am not a professional hairdresser, and do not think I am. I've dyed my hair A LOT of colours for many years now, so I have some knowledge of what products I like/are good and what works/ doesn't work.

 - This was the colour I had before the dyeing. Dark blonde and Black in my fringe.
- I used Wella Hair streaking Kit to get the black out of my fringe. As you can see by the photo ( even though my fringe is pinned up ) I have no black in my hair. I was left with a few ginger tones after this dye though.  I would recommend this dye to everybody who is trying to remove a previous colour!

- Here I used SMART BLONDE platinum bleach and toner to try get rid of the ginger tones out of my fringe. It did lift it better, and my roots ( as expected ) went white! But it still remained ginger in my fringe.

- I used LO'real Paris Recital Preference dye in the shade 10.21 Stockholm ( Very light pearl blonde )... you can't tell on the picture but this lightened my hair to a very pale yellow colour. After this ( I forgot to take a photo ) I used  XXL Platinum blonde dye on my fringe to remove all traces of orange. This worked REALLY well, so it meant I was ready to begin toning my hair!

- Here I have applied Directions La Riche White Toner on my hair. I left this on for 45 minutes. The photo below is how it turned out after using this. It REALLY worked and got rid of the yellow tones in my hair!

- As you can see the Directions White Toner worked REALLY well! I wasn't expecting that from it. It left some lilac tones in my hair which obviously I wasn't bothered about! I really recommend this!!

- Here I have Direction La Riche Silver Toner on my hair. And if i'm 100% honest, it did nothing. If you're someone who is going to follow what i've done, miss out the silver toner! It really did nothing at all!

- Here I mixed my dye up ready for my hair. I used a cheap conditioner which only cost me 99p ( So you can understand how cheap this conditioner was ). I put as much as I thought I needed for my hair in a bowl, then added about a table spoon and a half of Directions La Riche Lilac, then mixed it with my Stargazer tint brush.

- I left the lilac dye on my hair for 1 hour, then went and washed it off and used shampoo afterwards to make sure all of it was out of my hair.

- And this is the beauty that came out after it! I'm impressed with how it turned out to be honest!  I used a lot of dyes, but that was mainly due to the fact I had black in my hair. otherwise I wouldn't of had to of used so many! I love the way this has turned out! and i'm 100% certain i'm keeping it this colour for a while. A bonus of this is when it washes out in 6 weeks-7 weeks time, it leaves it a silver/grey colour which I also love!

- My hair did stay in good condition because of the products I used on it whilst dying it. I'll give a list of products I used to keep it healthy in another post, later this week!

- If you have any questions then feel free to ask and i'll reply as soon as I can :)

  1. Hmpfh :( well I am envious, since I can't seem to ever get an accurate colour like I want with my hair. I may try using the conditioner in dye next time though.
    Can we swap hair? Please?

  2. Aww, what colour(s) do you usually dye your hair? Yeah definitely try mixing conditioner with dyes. Helps your hair more than it damages it aswell! bonus! haha, if it was possible to swap hair, of course I would swap! :D

  4. I have been trying to get lilac! I used Splat hair dye but I diluated it & it came out pink! :( I ordered a virgin snow by manic panic. & im wondering if it'll work. What do you think?

    ReplyDelete
  5. Virgin Snow is a white toner, and therefore won't make your hair lilac, it will just whiten it(depending on your current hair colour). I recommend buying La Riche Directions in the colour Violet and diluting it to a lilac colour. It gives a gorgeous colour, and because you only use a small amount, the pot of dye lasts ages! :)

  6. this has been so helpful as i have been looking in to dying my hair lilac. my hair at the moment is its natural dark blonde. do you recommend i dye it a lighter blonde first and then use la riche white toner? i dont want it too strong lila colour, more of a tint? thanks

    ReplyDelete
  7. I 100% recommend dyeing it a lighter blonde!
For the lilac to tint your hair properly it needs to be as pale blonde/white as possible.
Hope the lilac goes well for you!

  8. Hello! You're hair is beautiful!! My friend wants this shade and asked if I could help. In your post you said you mixed La Riche Directions Lilac with conditioner but in a comment you recommended diluting Violet. Which should I try? Thanks!!

  9. Hello! Aw, thank you! :)
Use the violet and dilute it with white conditioner! You will get a better colour result! Hope it goes well xx

  10. I was wondering if you could write a list of what you used?
My hair is all black right now and wish to dye it back to lilac for the summer :)

    1. Of course. Hopefully you are from the UK as I am not aware if you can get the products in other parts of the world! :)

So these are the main ones I used to strip the colour from black to blonde:
Wella Hair streaking Kit ( This was really good )
      XXL Platinum blonde dye
LO'real Paris Recital Preference dye in the shade 10.21 Stockholm ( to get rid of any ginger tones the XXL dye had left )

And the toner I used was Directions White Toner, and I kept applying Touch of Silver Shampoo aswell to lighten it a bit.

Then to get the lilac, I used Directions Lilac and Conditioner! But I suggest using the Directions Violet and diluting it with conditioner as you get a stronger colour and it lasts longer!

And thank you so so much :D
I was confused when reading what you did and the comments. So I should get Directions Violet instead of Lilac?
      ^-^

    3. Welcome :)

Yeah I suggest getting Directions Violet. You only need to use a small amount, so you can save the pot and save yourself some money and reuse it when the lilac colour starts to fade! :) xx

I'd just go straight to the white toner, and try using Touch Of Silver shampoo! That will also help get rid of the yellow tones! :) xx

  12. My daughter has (naturally) red hair - very curly and dry - and wants to add some colors. I was reading that blue/green and purple do not do well on red hair. Any ideas for light purple - lilac or pink - without too much overbleaching for her red hair?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. As her hair is naturally red, not a lot of bleaching would need to be done as the hair should lighten pretty easily- unfortunately to achieve colours like pinks/purples the hair does need to be lightened, especially when the hair isn't already a light/blonde shade. I think just one coat of lightner on the areas she wants the colours should lift it enough and not damage the hair as long as a good conditioner is used after the lightner!

  13. All my hair is black if I use the instuctions it says would it work all over for me? Cos u had a black fringe x

    ReplyDelete
  14. It should work yeah. All hair is different though, so you may need to use more products after to keep lightening it- usually depends on how long you have coloured your hair black and how stained the hair is. x

    ReplyDelete
  15. This is brilliant!
My hair was blue and now it's black.
I was wondering if there are any detailed instructions as well as the products I should be using to acquire lilac.
I'm worried when I try to get it white, the blue will interfere.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Thank you!
mmm, not that i'm aware of!
If the blue interefere's you will just have to use another kit to strip your hair so the blue is removed!
Hope it goes well for you! xo

  16. Should I buy two of everything seeing as my hair is longer than shoulder length or are the products in big pots?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. The La Riche Directions lilac or violet colours will last you with one pot.
Products like the blonde dyes and colour kits to strip hair I suggest getting a couple of if your hair is quite long! xo

  17. Can you put the products in the order you used them and how long you let them set in?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. The products are in order on the blog post, and they were left on for the recommended times on the product boxes. This usually varied between 30-45 minutes with the lightening products and for the La Riche colourants, I kept these on usually for 1 hour to ensure the colour was soaked in to my hair. xo

  20. Hi!

Your photos n info is fab!

I'm a bleachaholic! I colour my hair every 4/5 weeks the night before I get it cut. I have really short hair

I first colored it in 2007 as something different before I went traveling & the colour stuck on me

I want my hair white but I end up with a creamy yellow that turns brassy

    So far I've used:

    White bleach powder
    Blue bleach powder
    Schwarzkopf live colour
    Loreal feria colour
    Purple manic toner
    La riche toner
    A touch of silver shampoo

Only recently have I found a combination that works but to be honest I still would like it whiter!

Blue bleach 35 minutes, wash off, blow dry, la riche toner but I only left it on for 5 minutes because when I've used it before once I left it on for 25 minutes n it went Lilac n the other time I left it on for 10 minutes but it still went Lilac! I don't want any Lilac tone in my hair, I want it white!

So this combo, for me, seems to work

I look after my hair, twice a week I cover my dry hair in a mixture of olive oil n white conditioner, wrap it in cling film, wrap a towel around my head n leave it like that for as long as I can

Any tips on getting my hair whiter would be hugely appreciated

    =)

  21. i have dyed dark brown hair right now and i've never dyed my hair lighter before. i know i'll have to bleach it to get the lilac color i want but about how long does the color last/how often will i have to re-dye it to keep the color constant? my cousin does my hair and she lives pretty far away from me so i wouldn't be able to visit her too often (unless i did it myself, but i have no personal experience with hair dye and don't want to mess it up!) so if it's pretty frequent i may just not do it at all and stick with my dark hair...

    thanks for your help!! x

    1. The lilac colour is a nightmare for fading very quickly. I was using the dye mix of conditoner and lilac every couple of weeks to keep it topped up. Although you are saying you have no personal experience with hair dye, topping up the lilac colour is the easiest thing. Get your cousin to show you how to make the dye up, and then all you need to do with it is literally rub it all over your hair like you would with shampoo. It isn't hard at all, unlike if you were dyeing your hair brown/black and have to be specific with where you put the hair dye.
If you are concerned about mixing the dye yourself, when you visit your cousin, you could ask her to make a large amount for you to store and use when needed. This is what I did to save time of mixing it.

Hope this helps and if you need to know anything else just leave another comment :) x

    1. The Directions White Toner I don't suggest using, it didn't do much for my hair at all. If you are aiming for a white/silver look before lilac, I suggest trying Wella Colour Fresh in the shade Silver- this is a semi permanent toning colour and works extremely well! It is what I currently use to make my hair silver toned.

      Aw, thank you! :)

    1. I would still use the hair streaking kit, just to get as much colour out as possible so you don't have to over use bleach and damage your hair excessively.

  24. I used the wella streaking kit and it left a lot of black still in it. So, I got color frost from the pharmacy, seeing as born blonde maxi wasn't around, now the ends of my hair are fried, just dead. I have the shampoo, conditioner and hair mask that I saw you used and hot oil treatments.
I cut the ends, but when I used the hot oil treatment today, just a small section of my hair got fried again.
What do you recommend I do? I'm afraid it's going to fry more and more with each bleach job >.<

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Give your hair a rest for a few weeks as you can't damage it anymore!
You are just best conditioning the hair a lot and using a lot of hair masks.
A great conditoner is Aussie 3 Minute Miracle - it is a product I swear by and use all the time. It should really help the fried bits of your hair if you can get a bottle of it.
Best suggestion I can give though is leave the colourants for a few weeks till you can get some health back in to your hair.
If you need any more advice just leave me a comment and I will reply as quick as possible!

  25. my hair is pale yellowly with some sections of white , like highlights, but i want it all snow white. Would the La Riche directions white toner do this?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. As long as your hair is a very pale yellow it should work for you! If it doesn't take to the yellow sections though, then I suggest maybe putting a pre-lightner on to your hair then trying again.

  26. I used wella streaking kit and it didn't change my hair at all. =[ so I got color frost. Then today I used dcash today, made it a lighter brown but a lot of sections didn't change at all. After I tried putting the XXL platinum in the darker areas to try and lighten them with no results. Any suggestions to get these areas to the blonde of the rest of my hair?

    1. Maybe try a colour before kind of product? Where it strips a lot of the colour build up in your hair so it is able to be lightended by streaking kits and platinum dyes. If you are from the UK places like Boots and Superdrug sell a product called colourb4. I haven't personally used this, but close friends have and they have suggested to others to use it. So maybe give a product like that a try?
      Hope this helps! xx

  27. Will using the white toner work for getting the yellow to white? And the light ginger as well?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It should work for the yellow tones as long as they are quite light. The toner probably won't remove the ginger, that will need bleaching or a very light blonde hair dye used on it. xx

  28. Hi, I really don't know what to do. I've wanted silver / grey / lilac hair for ages, but my hair dresser told me it would be impossible for me since I have naturally dark hair, and I have dyed over it many times.

So I got it bleached with 40 bleach mixed with conditioner, and then dyed it a brown colour, though it is still extremely red due to the fact I'd previously dyed it red many times.

So, what would you recommend trying to get my brownish/orange/reddish hair to the lilac without damaging it too much? My hair dresser said I'd have to bleach it to such an extent it would fall off?

    Thanks!

And by the way, your hair is beautiful!

    1. Overall your hair will get damaged trying to get it this colour.
My best advice is to follow the steps I gave with using streaking kits and products like ColourB4, try avoid as much bleach as possible and use alternative products to strip the colour from your hair. Use bleach when you need to start getting it light yellow/blonde and use streaking kits to get the brown/red out of your hair.

I've found Wella Streaking Kit is quite good for getting rid of dark shades. This is what I used to get the black out my fringe and straight to a ginger colour, and It did a really good job of it.

Purchase a small variety of hair care products to ensure whatever you do to your hair to change the colour, you are still keeping the health as best as possible. Leave in conditioners, Aussie 3 minute Miracle Conditioner(this will really help) and also occasional hot oil treatments.

Hope this helps and you get the hair you want! :) If you need anything else just leave another comment :) xx

  29. My hair no longer holds colour on the back where it's dark blonde/ginger. Would you recommend neutral protein filler? It says to leave it for 20 minutes then put the colour as normal. And should I get the lightest blonde I can find THEN use the stockholm very light pearl then white toner?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I have never personally tried a neautral protein filler, but if the colour is not taking to your hair in certain sections it is worth giving it a try.
Yes, get the lightest blonde- try an xxl blonde, these are usually very bright and strong. then apply the stockholm colour and then tone. Use toning shampoo as well as this should help - Touch Of Silver Shampoo.

I want to bleach my outgrowth than cover that and the faded blue with a grey or a greyish blue. And then make lavender/lila grey on the outgrowth part.

Or a total ashy purple/lavender and don't know what to choose to color correct my own.
